American Food Requests Continued

December 14th, 2009

Some time ago I posted this post: http://www.simondalfonso.id.au/blog/general/american-food-requests-for-australia/

The request has been half-satiated. I was walking along Acland Street, St Kilda the other night and noticed that a store had some Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream. Unfortunately, the RRP is $12 for a 500ml tub! Despite this, I indulged in a tub of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, but at that price, I will not be buying regularly.

What type of profit are the apparently ‘ethical’ company making at that price? At least Ben and Jerry’s have finally made it to Melbourne.

Vocalist wanted for prog metal band

June 18th, 2009

Melbourne based progressive metal band CIRCADIAN PULSE are seeking expressions of interest from vocalists.

Currently consisting of two guitarists, a bassist, a keyboardist and a drummer, we are currently working on material and are looking for a vocalist to complete the lineup. Whilst we are interested in auditioning a range of vocalists, the fact that we are influenced by bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Symphony X, Threshold and Kamelot might influence your decision to audition.

If interested in discussing this further, please contact Simon:

Media Watch on the ABC

October 25th, 2008

One of my favourite little programs on T.V. is the brilliant ABC program ‘Media Watch’. As stated on the program’s website, “Media Watch is Australia’s leading forum for media analysis and comment”. As well as keeping an eye on the correctness of the information delivered by the Australian media, the brilliant presenter Jonathon Holmes’ witty, skeptical, sardonic and sarcastic analyses and commentary on the Australian media scum is highly entertaining. Here is a link to their website http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/, where you can download past episodes.

Drummer wanted for prog band

August 3rd, 2008

I’m starting a band and am looking for a drummer. Drummers unfortunately don’t fall off the back of trucks and finding one, let alone a good one. is not the easiest of things. Posting this ‘muso wanted’ ad on my blog might slightly increase my chances of finding a drummer :)

Seeking expressions of interest from drummers. Two guitarists, bassist and keyboardist currently working on material and looking for a drummer to start a progressive metal band. We subsequently intend to search for a vocalist. We are interested in incorporating ideas from a variety of genres. Double bass drumming, additional percussive components and odd-time signatures welcome!

If interested in discussing this further, please feel free to contact me.

wp-plugins.net down!

February 26th, 2008

as someone who regularly uses Wordpress for both personal projects and clients, I have come to regard the plugin repository at wp-plugins.net as highly useful. I have just visited the site and am surprised to find that it has been temporarily disabled. If you currently go there, you will be greeted with this notification:

Due to excessive load on the database, my hosting company (Dreamhost) pulled the plug on this website.
I will be looking into ways to bring it back online as soon as possible…
Sorry…

Ibanez 6-String Bass Recently Acquired

February 18th, 2008

Just added an Ibanez 6-string to my bass collection.

In the U.S.A., was able to get this from a local Guitar Center store for $640 US. By comparison, in Australia I would looking to fork out around $1200 US.

Relative to a 4-string bass, the 6-string bass, with an added low-B string and high-C string, offers a nice extension to the sonic range deliverable by the instrument. For a while I was contemplating the idea of setting up a tenor bass, which is a 4-string bass tuned, from high to low as follows: A D G C. I decided for now to just go for the 6-string, since it offers a superset of the tenor string configuration. In particular, whilst getting a high-C string, which I really wanted to increase options regarding certain techniques and melodic, higher-octave playing, it was also important to have a bass with a low B-string in order to play the bass lines of a metal band like Inflames, which is a distinct possibility.

Not to forget one of the main motives to get a 6-string: I every so often get hold of the bass tabs for a Dream Theater song and need a 6-string if I want to play it properly.

Birdworld

January 22nd, 2008

I recently went with a friend to Birdworld, to fulfill a long-running jocular agreement between the two of us that we needed to go.

Birdworld, located outside the town of Beveridge just north of Melbourne, is a fun place for the whole family. There is a Hedge Maze with a viewing tower, an animal nursery containing a dozen species of animals, a bird complex with native and exotic birds, a picnic area with a play ground, shelter sheds, toilets and barbeque facilities.

Here are some photos:

horrible moments in the history of philosophy

January 18th, 2008

time for an infrequent post categorised under Philosophy. Here is a link to a nicely written blog post about horrible moments in the history of philosophy http://drjon.typepad.com/jon_cogburns_blog/2007/11/horrible-moment.html. The part on Turing served as a reminder of the great man’s belatedly publicized accomplishments and subsequent shabby treatment by the British government.
