Hello world!

January 24th, 2007

Here is the inaugural blog post for my revamped website. This website was originally powered by a ASP.Net 2.0 template provided by Microsoft, in large part due to the fact that I wanted to familiarise myself with ASP.Net at the time I decided to create this website. I have now switched to a visual template which I prefer and a PHP backend. One advantage of switching to PHP is the far greater availability on the internet of free code to re-use. Another advantage is that I now get to use the great WordPress blogging system, a significant improvement over what I was using before. One reason I was prompted to search for a better blog system is that the old system did not parse special characters in comment submissions very well, as evidenced by a friend’s attempt to post a response to one of my blogs. Due to what I assume was a special character, a significant portion of his comment was truncated. Let me know what you think about the new design.

A few other computer things are on the agenda. As well as this website, the Friends of Merri Creek website which I look after is also getting a facelift. Of particular importance is the fact that it will now be driven by a content management system (CMS), so that I myself don’t have to regularly tend to editing sections like the events calendar and news page; rather, these tasks can now be handled by others. At this stage it looks like I will be using the Website Baker CMS.

Also, I am in the process of expanding and polishing my computer setup at home. I recently acquired an AMD Athlon64 AM2 Dual Core 3800+ CPU and a Gigabyte M55Plus-S3G motherboard. Coupled with 1G Memory, this should provide some much welcome computing power! This will be a dual-boot system, consisting of both Windows and Linux. I recently downloaded a copy of Mandriva Linux Free 2007. The installation file I obtained is nifty in that opts for a 32/64 bit version installation based on its detection of your CPU. As for Windows, I am looking to get my hands on a copy of Windows Vista. I will report back once I have given it a run.
